Pillar 01

Disability Inclusion, Rights & Anti-Stigma

Confronting stigma and discrimination through grassroots advocacy, public sensitization, and community dialogues.

In many rural communities across Uganda, persons with disabilities face deep-seated societal misconceptions. Nihira Foundation organizes community dialogues with local elders, church leaders, teachers, and local government officials to build welcoming, barrier-free environments.

Key Interventions:

  • Community-wide anti-stigma sensitization workshops
  • Legal and human rights advocacy for persons with disabilities
  • School-based inclusion campaigns and disability sports

Pillar 02

Education, Assistive Aids & Caregiver Health

Equipping special interest schools, providing mobility aids, and supporting caregivers of children with developmental delays.

We train mothers and caregivers of children with delayed development, Down syndrome, and autism. By providing practical care techniques, therapeutic guidance, and assistive learning tools, we create supportive home environments.

Key Interventions:

  • Assessments and distribution of wheelchairs, crutches, and walkers
  • Construction of accessible ramps in rural schools and public halls
  • Caregiver mental health and respite support circles

Economic Empowerment & Livelihoods (IGAs)

Helping households and groups achieve self-reliance through business skills and village savings.

Economic empowerment begins with comprehensive household assessments. We group families according to skills and market opportunities, providing seed capital, trade equipment, and financial literacy to launch profitable income-generating activities.

Key Interventions:

  • Market-oriented business skills and book-keeping training
  • Establishment of Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs)
  • Distribution of micro-enterprise technologies and startup tools

Pillar 04

Vocational Skills & Inclusive Community Centers

Practical trade skills and safe community spaces where vulnerable youth can thrive.

Our inclusive centers provide vocational training in tailoring, crafts, carpentry, and ICT tailored specifically to persons with disabilities and out-of-school youth.

Key Interventions:

  • Tailoring, leathercraft, and carpentry vocational training
  • Safe communal hubs for peer mentoring and psychological support
  • Graduation startup toolkits for new tradespersons
Household food security garden and sustainable farming in Uganda
Pillar 05

Nutrition & Household Food Security

Strengthening household resilience through climate-smart agriculture and nutrition support.

Nutrition directly underpins physical health, childhood cognitive development, and poverty reduction. Nihira Foundation trains vulnerable families in organic vegetable gardens, poultry keeping, and post-harvest handling.

Key Interventions:

  • Distribution of high-yield vegetable seeds and drought-resistant crops
  • Kitchen gardening training for families with limited mobility
  • Nutritional rehabilitation guidance for malnourished children
